So after the sloppy men's and women's 4x100 relay races, the leader of USA Track and Field said the federation will conduct a "comprehensive review" of the way it trains and coaches its relay teams after the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams each blew medal chances by dropping the baton in Olympic qualifying.
Both of the teams dropped the baton and did not advance to the finals. In his weekly blog on the USATF Web site, CEO Doug Logan said he has received a number of e-mails from fans saying the dropped batons in both relays Thursday were "reflective of a lack of preparation, lack of professionalism, and of leadership."
"I agree," Logan wrote Friday. "Dropping a baton isn't bad luck, it's bad execution. Responsibility for the relay debacle lies with many people and many groups, from administration to coaches to athletes. That's why, when these Games are completed, we will conduct a comprehensive review of all our programs."
Darvis Patton and Tyson Gay missed on the final exchange in the men's semifinal heat. Gay worked on exchanges with Patton in Beijing but was not present at the U.S. track team's training camp in Dalian, China, where two full practices were dedicated to baton passing.
Torri Edwards and Lauryn Williams bobbled the last exchange in the women's race. The men missed the final for the first time since 1988, and the second since 1912, and the women for the first time since 1948.
It means the U.S. will go 0-for-6 in Olympic sprint events -- 100, 200 or relay -- for the first time ever. If you didn't see the Men's and Women's butterfingers relay moments it's HERE. All in all, yesterday was a bad day for the US Teams as a whole, favored women's diver Laura Wilkinson came in last, and the US Women's softball team, which has never lost a game since the sport made it's debut, lost to Japan and was left with a Silver medal. My thought is no country is perfect, but yesterday's historical losses make for a strong comeback, especially with the Men's Basketball final coming up. I'll continue keeping you updated with these last couple days of the Olympics so stay tuned.
Tonight: All the relay finals go down..so don't be looking for the USA representation till tomorrow.
Note: There was a recent quote that I really liked by Micheal Phelps:
"It's the Olympics. If you can't get up to swim in the morning, don't go.”

Yeah, that was just sloppy as hell...mofos on the track team were acting like the Men's Basketball team in Athens 4 years ago...that's sorry. This is your job...why you even bothering to show up if you gonna put out a pussy performance. Listen to M. Phelps...he didn't lie.
i bet it wouldn't be a problem if it was an ounce of weed or a can of hairspray. mwahahahaha
@ Tyroc, Snaps and Claps, say dat say dat. I was throughly disappointed. Plus, it's even harder seeing it happen twice right as the announcers say, "I know their coaches are just conveying to them, just get the hand-off"..craziness.
@ Anthony..LMFAO!
What up!
I think it was a lack of basic fundamental execution. just like when the runners slack up with like 30-40m to go until the finish. It's like once they get to the Olympics or on a professional athlete all that fundamental training gets thrown out of the window!! It doesn't set a good example for all the future track and field athletes out there. You train hard for damn near your whole life to make it to a point like this and get lazy? WTH! Great post by the way!
Peace
